Cross of the Heroes: Order of 5 January 1925

Origin and history

La Croix aux Héros de Camelin is a medieval vestige located in the cemetery of Camelin, in the department of Aisne. Dating from the 12th century, this monument is presented in the form of a stone stand, the only remaining element of the old cross. It is decorated with motifs typical of Romanesque art, including interlaces and four heads carved in the upper part. An opening at the top of the rise suggests that a wooden cross was once fixed there, probably to Christianize this stone.

Classified as historical monuments by order of 5 January 1925, this cross bears witness to the funerary and religious art of the Middle Ages in the region. Its current location in Camelin's new cemetery underscores its memorial role, although its exact origin and primary function remain partially enigmatic. The engraved patterns, evoking ties or laces, could symbolize local beliefs or practices of the time.

The precise location of the Cross aux Héros is indicated as the 3 Chemin de la Vallée in Camelin, in the department of Aisne (Hauts-de-France). This monument, although partially degraded, remains a remarkable example of Picardic Romanesque heritage. Its classification among the historical monuments of Aisne makes it a protected and studied element for its archaeological and artistic value.
