Stone road cross: classification by decree of 9 July 1909

Origin and history

The stone cross of Breuvannes-en-Bassigny is a 15th century monument. Located in the commune of Breuvannes-en-Bassigny, in Haute-Marne (Department 52), it is classified as a Historic Monument by order of 9 July 1909. This type of cross, common in medieval countryside, often served as a religious landmark or symbol for travellers and local inhabitants.

In the 15th century, the Champagne-Ardenne region (now part of the Great East) was marked by a rural and artisanal economy. The road crosses, like Breuvannes-en-Bassigny, played an important social and spiritual role, punctuating roads and paths. They were often erected at crossroads or near villages, reflecting the piety and community organization of the time.
