Quadrilateral precinct known as Camp de César (see E 1487 to 1489): inscription by order of 3 February 1984
Origin and history
The camp of César de Jabreilles-les-Bordes is a quadrilateral enclosure dating from the Iron Age, located in the Haute-Vienne department, in the commune of Jabreilles-les-Bordes. This archaeological site, located at the so-called Bois-Taillis, bears witness to the defensive constructions of this period in Limousin (now New Aquitaine). Its name "Camp of Caesar" evokes a local tradition often assigning this type of remains to Roman times, although its construction dates back to the Iron Age.
The monument was listed as historical monuments by order of 3 February 1984. This protection recognizes its heritage and archaeological importance, although the available sources do not specify the details of the excavations or associated discoveries. The site is referenced in the Mérimée base, with an approximate location indicated by GPS coordinates and a postal address in Jabreilles-les-Bordes.
At the age of iron, enclosures such as Jabreilles-les-Bordes often served as refuges or assembly places for local populations. These structures reflect a social organization marked by sedentarization and the need to protect oneself. In Limousin, this period is characterized by the emergence of iron crafts, agriculture and growing trade, although few sources specifically detail the history of this camp.
