Origin and history

Camp du Bas de la Courbe is a former fortification located in La Courbe, Orne department, Normandy. Located on a height overlooking a meandering Orne River, this strategic site is classified as a barred spur, a type of natural defence reinforced by human development. Its location, immediately southwest of the parish church, suggests a sustainable occupation and a central role in the local territorial organization.

Archaeological research links this site to the period of the Final Tena (Second Iron Age, Gaulish era). An oppidum, i.e. a Gaulish stronghold, would have occupied this place, demonstrating its importance as a refuge or political and economic centre for local populations. The work of Pierre Giraud and Cyril Marcigny (2011) confirms the existence of similar fortified sites in Lower Normandy, highlighting their role in protohistoric power dynamics.

The Camp du Bas de la Courbe was officially recognized for its heritage value by an inscription for historical monuments on 5 March 1987. This protection specifically covers cadastral plots D 57 to 59 and 61, thus preserving a key vestige of the Gaulish occupation in Normandy. The available sources (Wikipedia, Monumentum, Merimée base) converge to make a representative example of the height fortifications of this region.

No specific information is available on potential sponsors, associated battles, or on-site artifacts. The current location, near the route of the Château Gonthier in La Butte (Écouché-les-Vallées), allows us to envisage future studies to refine the understanding of its history.
