Origin and history
The Ligurian camp of Mont des Mules is an oppidum located in the commune of Beausoleil in the Alpes-Maritimes. This archaeological site, built around 250 B.C., is located along the ancient Heracean Way, before its replacement by Via Julia Augusta. It is protected by a dry stone wall delimiting an area of approximately 6,000 m2, in arc of circle.
Ranked as a historic monument since 28 January 1939, it is located on the road between Beausoleil and La Turbie. The site, owned by the commune, comprises a square area of 200 metres side, one of which is flanked by the current road. Its strategic location suggests a defensive and commercial role in the region.
Archaeological research, particularly that carried out by Henri Geist and his collaborators in 2000, has made it possible to clarify its historical importance. The site is now referenced in the databases of the Ministry of Culture (Merimée) and accessible via approximate GPS coordinates, although its exact location is considered poor (level 5/10).
