Protohistoric fortifications of the barred spur type (Box H 522): inscription by order of 6 April 1984
Origin and history
The protohistoric camp of Saint-Martin-d'Arrossa, also present in the neighbouring commune of Saint-Étienne-de-Baïgorry, is an archaeological vestige dated from the Protohistory. This site, characterized by a stone parapet enclosure, bears witness to the fortification techniques used during this period. It was listed as a Historical Monument by order of 8 July 1980, stressing its heritage importance and its preservation.
The location of the camp in the Pyrénées-Atlantiques suggests a strategic role, probably linked to the defence or control of passages in this mountainous region. The protohistoric populations of this area lived mainly in agriculture, livestock and handicrafts, and these fortified camps often served as refuges or community centres. The stone enclosure, typical of the defensive architecture of the time, reflects a structured social organization and protection needs.
Available data from sources such as Monumentum indicate that the site is referenced under Insee 64490, attached to the commune of Saint-Martin-d'Arrossa. Although the practical information on visits or associated services is not detailed, its status as a Historic Monument guarantees official recognition. The accuracy of its location is estimated to be fair (Level 5), which may indicate uncertainties about its exact limits or extent.
