Origin and history

The protohistoric camp of Saint-Étienne-de-Baïgorry, also present in the neighbouring commune of Saint-Martin-d'Arrossa, is an architectural vestige dated from the Protohistory. This monument is characterized by an enclosure with stone parapets, typical of the fortifications of that time. It bears witness to the defensive construction techniques used by local people before Antiquity.

Ranked as a Historic Monument, the site was officially registered by ministerial decree on 8 July 1980. This protection applies specifically to camp structures, including cadastral plots A 1048 and 1051. The location of the monument, although documented in the Merimée base under Insee 64477 (Pyrénées-Atlantiques), remains approximate, with an accuracy assessed as fair (note 5/10) according to available sources.

The protohistoric camp is part of a mountain landscape of the Basque Pyrenees, an area where fortified settlements probably played a strategic role in controlling territories and routes of communication. In Protohistory, local communities lived mainly in agriculture, livestock and handicrafts, while fortified sites such as this could serve as refuges or power centres. No additional information is provided on archaeological excavations or on-site artifacts.

Administrative data indicate that the monument belongs to the commune of Saint-Étienne-de-Baïgorry (department 64), in the former Aquitaine region, now integrated into New Aquitaine. Approximate address, derived from GPS coordinates, points towards Urtxiloko Bidea Road, near Saint-Martin-d的Arrossa. No mention shall be made of the accessibility of the site to the public or of any associated tourist services.
