Origin and history
The protohistoric camp of Lantabat, also located in the municipality of Suhescun, is a major archaeological vestige of Protohistory in the Pyrénées-Atlantiques. This site, registered as a Historical Monument by order of 15 February 1982, is characterized by a enclosure with earth parapets, typical of the fortifications of this period. Available coordinates place the site near Chaparart, on the territory of Suhescun, although the official address is referenced in Lantabat (code Insee 64313).
The location of the camp is estimated with poor accuracy (note 5/10), reflecting the uncertainties associated with its exact delimitation. This type of protohistoric structure generally served as a refuge or strategic control place for local populations. The fortified camps of this period were often linked to agricultural, pastoral or military activities, in a context of societies undergoing social and technological change.
