Origin and history
The Protohistoric Camp of Toul-Goulic is an archaeological site located in Trémargat, in the Côtes-d'Armor department in Brittany. Set on a narrow promontory overlooking the natural chaos of Toul-Goulic, this fortified camp has long been mistakenly attributed to the Romans. Excavations conducted in 1962 revealed that he was actually occupied from Neolithic time, then during the Bronze Age and Iron Age, making a rare example of defence-adapted cut-off from prehistoric times.
Archaeological discoveries on the site include cut flint tools, moresulian-type polished axes (from a deposit located 15 km away), and pottery tensions dated from Bronze Age and Iron Age. A medium Bronze heel ax, found in the Blavet valley below, confirms the strategic importance of the place. These artifacts illustrate the artisanal and military activities of local prehistoric populations.
The Toul-Goulic camp was listed as a historical monument by order of 28 December 1965, thereby recognizing its heritage value. Research, notably that published by Pierre-Roland Giot in 1967 in Gallia prehistory, has made it possible to clarify his occupation and his role in regional history. The site remains a key testimony of the first fortifications in Brittany, linked to local exchanges as evidenced by the presence of polished stone axes.
Today, the Protohistoric Camp of Toul-Goulic is a place of interest for the study of Prehistory in Brittany. Although its exact location is estimated as "passable" (level 5/10) according to the databases, its listing among historical monuments makes it a protected site. It provides insight into the lifestyles and defence techniques of the Neolithic and Protohistoric societies of the region.
