Fortified protohistoric camp with earth parapets (Box AZ 10): inscription by decree of 15 April 1980

Origin and history

The fortified protohistoric camp known as Gastelusare is a monument located in the commune of Ordiarp, in the department of the Pyrénées-Atlantiques (64). This site, dated from the Protohistory, is characterized by defensive structures on earth, typical of the installations of this time. It reflects the strategic and military concerns of local populations, although little specific information on its use or history is available from current sources.

The Protohistory, the pivotal period between the Bronze Age and Antiquity, sees the development in Aquitaine (now New Aquitaine) of fortified habitats such as Gastelusare. These camps often served as refuges or places of territorial control for agro-pastoral communities. Their establishment reflects a hierarchical social organization and increasing mastery of defence techniques.

The Ordiarp site is part of this regional context, without any details specific to its occupation or its occupants being documented in the sources consulted.
