Pont Saint-Joseph sur le canal (cad. non cadastre, domaine fluvial): inscription by decree of 27 October 1997
Origin and history
The Pont Saint-Joseph d'Agde is a key element of the Canal du Midi, an art work built during the second half of the 17th century. This bridge, located in the city of Agde, illustrates the technical and economic ambition of this period, marked by the development of inland waterways to facilitate the transport of goods between the Atlantic and the Mediterranean. In the Occitanie region, in the seventeenth century, hydraulic infrastructure such as the Canal du Midi played a central role in the local economy.
They made it possible to link areas of agricultural and wine production with ports, thereby boosting trade. Bridges, such as Saint Joseph's, were strategic points for the crossing of rivers and canals, while ensuring the continuity of the channels of communication.
