Origin and history
The canonical houses of Châlons-en-Champagne constitute a set of buildings located Place Notre-Dame, in the immediate vicinity of the collegiate Notre-Dame-en-Vaux. Their origin dates back at least to the Middle Ages, when the canons occupied a dedicated area, with a private entrance to the college cloister. These dwellings, reserved for the members of the chapter, reflected their ecclesiastical status and their role in local religious life.
In the 18th century, the current buildings were built or thoroughly renovated, as evidenced by their classification as Historic Monuments in 1975 for their facades and roofs. Their strategic location, between Notre Dame Square and Nicolas Durand Street, highlights their integration into the medieval urban fabric, while marking the architectural evolution of the following centuries. Today, these houses house a parish house, perpetuating their initial religious vocation.
Historical sources refer to 19th-century monographs, such as those of M. Loir, J. Chaumont, or Louis Barbat, which document their heritage significance. Their official protection in 1975 (decree of 17 March) specifically concerns the external elements (facades and roofs), while their present management is carried out by an association. Their conservation status and accessibility (visits, rentals) are not specified in available sources.
