Origin and history
The Congregation of Spiritans, founded in 1703, had the mission of evangelizing the poor. In 1841, the Congregation of the Holy Heart of Mary, dedicated to helping black and free slaves, settled in Bordeaux in 1848 and merged with the Spirits. This union marks the beginning of their local establishment, leading to the construction of an emblematic chapel.
The site of the Chapel of Spiritans was launched in 1856 in Bordeaux, in an innovative neo-Gothic style incorporating modern materials such as cast iron. Completed in 1858, it was enriched between 1860 and 1884 with stained glass windows and painted decorations evoking medieval illuminations. This uniquely developed decorative program makes it a unique monument to the work of the congregation in the 19th century.
Located at 20 rue Gratiolet, the chapel has been classified as a historic monument since 2017. Private property, it bears witness to Bordeaux religious and architectural history, mixing Gothic tradition and emerging industrial techniques. However, its state of conservation and its openness to the public remain unspecified in available sources.
