Origin and history

The chapel of the Oratory of Beaune was built between 1708 and 1710 under the direction of architect Louis Trestournel, member of the Congregation of the Oratory. Its architecture is distinguished by a nave with a centered plane covered with a polygonal dome, integrated in a square massif flanked by four chapels. The choir, composed of a square span under dome and a semicircular apse, is bordered by corridors surmounted by stands. A vault dedicated to Oratorians is located under the southern corridor.

In 1710, the sculptor Dijonnais Rollin proposed a quotation for a statue of Virgin with Child decorated with a banner and arms of the Brunet family, but his execution remains uncertain: destroyed during the Revolution or never realized. The facade, including its window and a pilastre, was refurbished in the late 19th century, while the mosaic floor dates back to the same period. Classified as a Historical Monument in 1921, the chapel now belongs to the municipality of Beaune.

The building illustrates the influence of the Oratorian order in Burgundy, mixing architectural rigour and Baroque decoration. Its present state preserves traces of the changes of the 19th century, while preserving its original structure. The approximate location (75 Rue de Lorraine) and its ranking make it a rare testimony of this regional religious heritage.
