Origin and history
The Chapel of the Counts of Créhange is a religious building located in Saint-Avold, in the department of Moselle (Great East region). Built in the second half of the 16th century, it illustrates the Christian architecture of the late Renaissance in Lorraine. Classified as historical monuments by order of 16 September 1985, it includes an adjoining gallery, bearing witness to its heritage importance.
According to the sources, the chapel was erected after 1574 for Pierre Ernest de Créhange and his wife Marie de Mansfeld, members of the local aristocracy. In the 19th century, the building was transformed into a shed when the comtal house became the hotel of Paris, marking a change of usage due to the urban evolution of Saint-Avold. Its current address, 45 Hirschauer Street, corresponds to its historic location.
The classification as a historical monument concerns both the chapel and its gallery, protected for their architectural value and their connection to the history of the Counts of Crehange. Data from the Merimée database and sources such as Monumentum confirm its heritage status, while highlighting its precise location in the city centre of Saint-Avold, near the former noble residence.
