Origin and history

The chapel of Perros-Hamon is an 18th-century religious building located in Ploubazlanec, in the Côtes-d'Armor department, Brittany. Originally it belonged to the former municipality of Perros-Hamon and constituted an enclave of the diocese of Dol within the bishopric of Saint-Brieuc. Its architecture is distinguished by a nave, a transept and a flat bedside, complemented by a south porch and a west façade decorated with three niches housing statues.

The chapel was historically dedicated to the commemoration of the sailors "peries at sea", as evidenced by the ex-votos and plates on the southern porch. These tributes remind the victims of Great Fishing, a major activity for the coastal communities of Brittany. Over time, the "wall of the missing" of Ploubazlanec cemetery has taken over this memorial function, although the chapel still retains these traces of the past.

The chapel, classified as historical monuments by decree of 6 March 1925, is also characterized by remarkable architectural elements. Inside, a walled frame forms a vault, while outside, the bell tower and the sculptures of the corbellations highlight its sober Baroque style. The gable niche of the porch, with its statue and carved depreciation, adds to its heritage interest.

The chapel of Perros-Hamon thus illustrates the religious heritage of Brittany, mixing maritime devotion and architectural heritage. Its inscription as a historical monument in 1925 attests to its cultural value and its role in local collective memory.
