Origin and history

Mathieu's Roman quarry is an archaeological vestige located in the commune of Montagnac, in the department of Gard (30), in the Occitan region. This site, dated from ancient times, bears witness to the exploitation of natural resources under the Roman Empire, although the details of its exact use or organization remain little documented in available sources. Its listing in the inventory of Historic Monuments by decree of 5 February 1987 underlines its heritage importance, thus protecting a key element of the local ancient heritage.

Roman quarries played an essential role in the construction of the old infrastructure, providing materials such as stone for roads, public buildings or monuments. In the regional context of Languedoc, these sites were often integrated into wider production networks, reflecting the Roman economic and social organization. Although the archives do not specify the techniques used in Mathieu, these careers were generally operated by skilled workers, sometimes local slaves or artisans, under the supervision of the imperial administration or landowners.
