Origin and history
The house at 16 rue des Quatre-Huyes in Vendôme is an emblematic building of the first half of the 19th century, built between 1830 and 1848. It illustrates the influence of companionship, a growing artisanal movement at this time. Its architecture is distinguished by a gistard-linked dormitory and croche link, assembled at half-wood, reflecting a sober but mastered technique. The inner cradles bear companion inscriptions, including U.V.G.T., an acronym related to the rite of the companions of the Devoir (or Soubise), as well as the motto God protects the arts, testifying to the spiritual and professional importance of these artisans.
The street façade and roof of this house were protected by a registration order under the Historic Monuments on 29 April 1999. This classification underscores its heritage value, both for its architectural style and for its connection to the social history of companionship. The location, in the centre of Vendôme (Loir-et-Cher), makes it a representative example of the artisanal heritage of the Centre-Val de Loire region, where corporations played a key role in the transmission of know-how.
The symbols engraved in the crib voids, like U.V.G.T., recall the rituals and hierarchy of companions, while the religious maxim evokes their quest for divine protection for their profession. These elements give the house a technical and symbolic dimension, characteristic of the Companions of the period. The accuracy of its location (noted 6/10 in the Merimée base) makes it possible to situate it with satisfactory, though perfectible, reliability in the historical urban fabric of Vendôme.
