Origin and history

The house located at 37 Grande Rue in Quintin, in the Côtes-d的Armor, is a typical example of the 17th century Breton civil architecture. It is distinguished by its finely ground wooden front-sole beams, visible on both floors, as well as a small head carved in relief on the first floor. These decorative elements bear witness to the artisanal know-how of the time and the probably easy social status of its occupants.

In 1691, Quintin was erected as a duchy, a period that saw the construction or embellishment of many buildings in the city. This house, although modest in appearance, reflects this urban and architectural dynamic. Its inscription in the inventory of Historic Monuments by order of 28 May 1951 specifically concerns its wooden facade and its cover, highlighting their heritage value.

The location of the house, in the Grande Rue, suggests its integration into the commercial or artisanal fabric of Quintin, a city then marked by its role as economic crossroads in inland Brittany. Half-timbered houses or wooden facades, such as this one, were common in prosperous villages, serving both as a dwelling, workshop or place of commerce. Their preservation today offers a concrete overview of daily life under the Old Regime.
