Origin and history
The house at 4 rue Conchette in Thiers is an emblematic building of 17th century classical architecture. It is distinguished by its rectangular inner courtyard and a communication corridor opening onto the street. The most remarkable element is its four-level square staircase, located on the south side of the courtyard. This staircase, on the rampant flights between straight spans, is highlighted by rectangular geminied bays, of which the third level has a crusillon. The interiors, although modernized, retain French ceilings and original red tiles.
The street façade is marked by a unique arcade portal, framed by two pilasters and surmounted by a triangular pediment. This portal, typical of the classical era, highlights the noble character of the house. The house was fully listed as a Historical Monument by order of 10 February 2010, including its staircase on courtyard. This classification protects an architectural heritage representative of the bourgeois dwellings of Thiers, a city marked by an artisanal and industrial history, especially in the field of cutlery.
Interior overhauls did not alter most of the original structure, allowing significant decorative elements such as ceilings or tiles to be retained. The location of the house, in the historic center of Thiers, reinforces its heritage interest. The accuracy of its geographical location is considered satisfactory a priori, with an address confirmed by the Merimée bases and approximate GPS coordinates. The house does not seem open to the public for regular visits, but its status as a Historic Monument ensures its preservation.
