Origin and history

The canonial house, located 7 rue du Cloître-Notre-Dame in Chartres, is a 13th century monument. It is located in the cloister of Notre-Dame, opposite the royal gate and the north tower of the cathedral. This building, classified as Historical Monument since 1911, illustrates medieval architecture linked to the life of the canons, members of the clergy living in community around the cathedrals.

The facade of this house presents a sculptured gallery on the first floor, composed of six arched bays in a warhead, separated by columns with carved capitals. Each span combines a rectangular window and an imposte decorated with sculptures. The transformations of the ground floor and second floor, dated from the late eighteenth century, contrast with the preserved medieval structure.

Owned by a public institution and the department of Eure-et-Loir, this canonical house bears witness to the role of the Canons in managing the religious and administrative affairs of Chartres in the Middle Ages. Its classification in 1911 underscores its heritage importance, linked to the history of Notre Dame Cathedral and the medieval town planning.

Available sources, such as Wikipedia and Monumentum, confirm its status as a Historic Monument and describe its protected elements, including the façade. Its exact address, 7 rue du Cloître-Notre-Dame, and its Insee code (28085) place it precisely in the historic centre of Chartres, in the Centre-Val de Loire region.
