Origin and history
The house at 20 quai Saint-Nicolas is a historic monument located in the centre of Strasbourg, in the department of Bas-Rhin (Great East region). This building, whose facades and roofs have been protected since 1929, embodies the civil architectural evolution between the 16th and 18th centuries. Its inscription in the title of historical monuments underscores its heritage interest, particularly for its interior elements such as the 18th century staircase.
Strasbourg, the major city of the Alsace region, has had an urban history marked by German and French influences. Bourgeois houses like this often reflected the prosperity of local merchants or artisans. Their preservation makes it possible today to understand the lifestyles and social organization of the modern era, in a then strategic city for trade and culture in Central Europe.
