Monumental gate on street: inscription by order of 8 February 1928
Origin and history
The house in Vorges, in the department of Aisne (Hauts-de-France), is a 17th-century civil building. This monument is representative of the domestic architecture of this period, marked by decorative and structural elements specific to modern times. Although little documented, this house is distinguished by its monumental gate on street, which justified its inscription in title of Historical Monuments by order of 8 February 1928.
In the 17th century, the Picardie region, now integrated with Hauts-de-France, was mainly rural and agricultural. The houses of that time often served as housing for bourgeois or peasant families, while reflecting social hierarchies through their size and decoration. The monumental doors, like that of this house, were not only aesthetic elements, but also symbols of social status.
These constructions were part of an evolving urban or village fabric, marked by the growing influence of classical architectural styles.
