Door with forged iron imposte (Box B 630): inscription by order of 27 December 1946

Origin and history

The house located in Narbonne, dating from the 17th century, is classified as Historic Monument mainly for its gate on street, characteristic of the architecture of this period. The very low arch of the entrance is framed by a molded decor, with two crossettes at the top angles. A mask adorned with a shell, surrounded by vegetal motifs, surmounts the door, while a console decorated with linens attached to its volutes embellishes the impression of wrought iron.

The precise history of its construction remains unknown, but its inscription in the inventory of Historical Monuments by decree of 27 December 1946 underlines the heritage importance of this architectural element. The door, with its working imposte, is the only protected component (cadastral reference B 630). The exact address, 12 rue de la Comédie, places this monument in the historic centre of Narbonne, although its approximate GPS location also indicates the 2 Impasse Rameau.

The decorative style of the door, mixing plant motifs and carved elements like the shell mask, reflects the artistic influences of the 17th century in Languedoc. These ornamental details, though modest, bear witness to the care taken to embellish urban facades during this time, when civil architecture began to assert itself as a social and aesthetic marker.
