Origin and history
The house located in the 12th Place du Marché in Dambach-la-Ville is a civil building dating from the 4th quarter of the 17th century, more precisely from 1686. It was built for a sabotier artisan from Savoie, Alexandre Sermonnet. Its status as a historic monument was formalized by a classification order in 1937, specifically protecting its facades and roofs. The date of construction and the initials of the owner appear on two windows as well as on a cornel post, attesting to its historic authenticity.
Dambach-la-Ville, located in the department of Bas-Rhin in the Grand Est region, was at that time an Alsatian village marked by artisanal and wine-making activities. The houses of this period often reflected the relative prosperity of their owners, as evidenced by this dwelling with careful architectural elements. The 1937 ranking underscores its heritage importance in a context where the preservation of the old building became a national priority.
Today, this house remains a representative example of the Alsatian habitat of the late seventeenth century, with its structural and decorative characteristics. Its history, linked to a Savoyard migrant, also illustrates the population movements and cultural exchanges in France of the Ancien Régime. The legal protections it enjoys guarantee its conservation for future generations, while anchoring Dambach-la-Ville in the regional heritage landscape.
