Origin and history
The Benezis House, located in Vias in the Hérault, is a civil building dating from the 4th quarter of the 15th century and the 1st quarter of the 16th century. Its facade, in volcanic and limestone stone of the quarries of Bréginnes, has carved shields attesting to its status as a bourgeois residence. The building was initially larger, extending to the old ramparts near the northern gate of the city, between Verdun Street and the missing enclosure. A staircase with screws, enclosed in a circular basalt turret, was a central element of the primitive facade, now partially preserved.
The house housed the bishops of Agde from the twelfth to the sixteenth century, although its current construction dates from later periods. The old parts of the façade (scaling door, window of the first floor, shields) and the stair turret were inscribed in the historic monuments by order of 30 July 1963. These elements reflect local architectural techniques, such as the ribs of the frames or the clawed columnettes, characteristic of the transition from late Gothic to Renaissance.
Stylistic analysis suggests local archaisms in mouldings and structure, compatible with the second half of the 15th century rather than with the beginning of the 16th. The house thus illustrates the evolution of urban residences in Languedoc, between medieval heritage and renaissant influences. Its location near the ramparts underlines its role in the defensive and social organization of Vias at that time.
