Origin and history

The house located 6 rue de Verdun in Saint-Jean-d'Angély is a typical 16th century building, built in wooden panels. This building, composed of a ground floor and two floors in corbellation, illustrates the Renaissance civil architecture in the region. Its inscription in the title of historical monuments, by order of 26 August 1943, specifically protects its facade on street and roof, highlighting its heritage interest.

Saint-Jean-d'Angély, located in Charente-Maritime (Nouvelle-Aquitaine), was at that time a city marked by commercial and craft activities. Half-timbered houses, like this one, often served as housing for local merchants or artisans. Their corbelling structure allowed to optimize space in narrow streets, while showing some architectural prosperity.

The inscription of this house in 1943 reflects the desire to preserve the built heritage of the region, especially after the destruction of the Second World War. Today, it reflects urban evolution and medieval and renaissant construction techniques still visible in the city centre.
