House (Case AX 65): Order of 8 September 1999

Origin and history

The Gothic House, classified as a Historic Monument since 1999, is one of the few preserved testimonies of the medieval civil architecture of Beaucaire. Its inner courtyard, known as "Gothic", dates back to the 15th century and is distinguished by its squared galleries covered with dogive crosses, surmounted by a carpented floor. The guardrails on both levels, finely worked, as well as a 17th century staircase located in the southeast corner, illustrate the architectural evolution of the building throughout the centuries.

The street façade, although dating from the 19th century, contrasts with that of the back yard, rebuilt in the 17th century. This mixture of periods reflects the urban transformations of Beaucaire, where medieval remains are associated with more recent additions. The house, owned by the municipality, retains a major heritage value as a tangible trace of the medieval and classical past of the city.

The protected elements include the courtyard with its galleries, screw staircase, and facades, offering an overview of constructive techniques and decorative styles from the 15th and 17th centuries. The official address, 8 rue Victor-Hugo, and its GPS location confirm its anchoring in the historic centre of Beaucaire, in the Gard department.
