Origin and history
The medieval house of Beaune, dated from the 13th century, is considered the oldest in the city. Its floor retains original arrangements, including eight contiguous bays forming a skeleton, an architectural party widespread in Cluny but rare in Burgundy. These bays, topped by tympanos decorated with trilobes, are separated by columns or pilasters with capitals carved of hooks. This decor reflects a marked clunisian influence, exceptional in the region.
The ground floor, modified several times, bears traces of major transformations in the seventeenth century, partially erasing its medieval aspect. On the court side, the modifications were so profound that it is impossible to find the original distribution. Today, the house is integrated into a charitable institution, and its facade and roof were protected by an inscription to the Historical Monuments in 1925.
The building illustrates the adaptation of medieval buildings to modern needs, with a street façade preserving Gothic elements, while the interior and courtyard have been redesigned for contemporary uses. Its exact address, 10 Rue Rousseau-Deslandes, makes it a tangible witness to the Burgundian civil architecture of the Middle Ages, despite the alterations suffered over the centuries.
