Origin and history

A typical example of medieval civil architecture is the log house at 2 Rue Moncorny in Agen. Built in the 14th century, it illustrates the techniques of half-timber construction that were then widespread in French cities. This type of building, often intended for housing or commerce, reflects the urban and social organization of the time.

In the 14th century, Agen, like many cities in southwestern France, was marked by a dynamic economy focused on trade and crafts. Wood-paned houses, frequent in city centres, served both as housing and workshop for artisans or merchants. Their wooden structure allowed rapid and modular construction, adapted to the changing needs of expanding cities.
