Origin and history
The house located at 47 Holgate Street in Carentan is a civil building dating from the 18th century, typical of the domestic architecture of this period in Lower Normandy. It is distinguished by its facades and roofs, as well as by a remarkable set of thirty-one painted hazes distributed in several rooms, from the ground floor to the first floor. These interior decorative elements, combined with the structure of the building itself, motivated its inclusion in the inventory of Historic Monuments by order of 28 December 1978.
The classification refers specifically to the exterior parts (façades and roofs) and the painted decorations of the main rooms, including the entrances, corridor, dining room and kitchen on the ground floor, as well as the bedrooms and bathrooms upstairs. The official address registered in the Mérimée base confirms its anchoring in the center of Carentan, in the department of the Manche (code Insee 50099), in the Normandy region. The accuracy of its geographic location is estimated as fair, with an approximate GPS address indicating the proximity of Holgate Street.
This type of bourgeois or affluent house illustrates the way of life of the upper or commercial classes in Normandy in the Enlightenment century. The painted mists, often made by local artisans, reflect the artistic tastes of the period and the desire to ornament the interiors. Although the sources do not mention any historical characters associated with this site, its listing as Historic Monuments underscores its heritage importance for the understanding of habitat and regional decorative arts.
