Origin and history
The house of the Cros is an emblematic 17th century building, located in the village of Tirenges, Haute-Loire. This monument is distinguished by its portal, the only element protected by historical monuments since a decree of 23 September 1949. Its architecture reflects the characteristics of bourgeois or notable houses of this period in Auvergne, a region marked by a rural and artisanal economy.
In modern times, such houses often served as residences for wealthy families, such as merchants, local notables or landowners. In the context of the Haute-Loire, then part of the former province of Auvergne, these houses played a central social and economic role, sometimes hosting activities related to agriculture, commerce or local government. Their preservation today offers a material testimony of the daily life and social hierarchies of that time.
