Origin and history
Pelvoysin House, located at 15 Pelvoysin Street in Bourges, has been a listed historical monument since 1910. Built between 1513 and 1515, it embodies the civil architecture of the French Renaissance in the Berry. This building was commissioned by Étienne Jaupitre, a prosperous bourgeois and professional merchant, reflecting the economic boom of Bourges at that time.
The building is attributed to architect Guillaume Pelvoysin, whose name remains associated with this emblematic achievement. Designed for commercial use, the house illustrates the central role of merchants in 16th century urban life. Its external parts, protected by ministerial decree, bear witness to a remarkable architectural know-how for the time.
Today owned by a private company, the Pelvoysin House retains a major heritage value in the historic centre of Bourges. Its exact address, confirmed by the Mérimée base, makes it a point of interest for the study of urban planning and commerce under Francis I. The accuracy of its location is assessed as satisfactory, facilitating its identification in the medieval and reborn urban fabric of the city.
