Origin and history
The house at 11 Place Saint-Étienne is a historic monument located in the centre of Strasbourg, in the department of Bas-Rhin. Built during the first half of the 17th century, it illustrates the domestic architecture of this period in Alsace, marked by both Germanic and French influences. Its listing in the inventory of historic monuments in 1931 reflects its heritage value, particularly for its facades and roof, protected by ministerial decree.
Strasbourg, in the 17th century, was a dynamic city under the influence of both the Holy Roman Empire and the Kingdom of France, reflected in its urban planning and architecture. Bourgeois houses, like that of Place Saint-Étienne, played a central role in the economic and social life of the city. They often housed artisans, merchants or local notables, thus participating in the structuring of historic districts.
This type of building, by its conservation, offers today a material testimony of this pivotal period for the Alsatian region.
