Stairs tower, turret giving access to the terrace and galleries on courtyard: inscription by order of 12 October 1946
Origin and history
The house in Beaucaire, dating from the 17th century, is a representative example of the domestic architecture of this period in the region. It is characterized by a narrow courtyard with a round staircase tower, containing a spiral staircase. Each floor has two doors: one facing a gallery, the other on a living room. The gallery on the second floor rests on two stone consoles, while the tower is covered on a terrace, accessible by a stair turret enclaved in the attices, surmounted by a cone of hollow stone.
This type of staircase tower, frequent in Beaucaire, illustrates local construction techniques. The partially emerging turret provides access to the terrace and reflects an optimised spatial organisation. Protected elements, listed by order of October 12, 1946, include the stairway tower, turret and galleries, highlighting their heritage value.
The precise address, 11 rue Jean-Jacques-Rousseau, confirms its anchoring in the historic centre of Beaucaire, in the department of Gard. The location, although noted as "passable" (level 5/10), remains a reference point for the study of 17th century urban habitat in Occitanie. The house thus reflects the architectural and social practices of the time, where galleries and stairs played a central role in everyday life.
