Origin and history

The Ichante House, listed as a Historic Monument, is a mansion located in Aydius, in the Pyrénées-Atlantiques. Built between the 18th century and the first half of the 19th century, it is distinguished by its exterior walls decorated with patriotic murals (Napoleon I, tree of freedom, French flag) and engraved dardian plates. The latter trace the genealogy of the Ichant family, political annals covering the Revolution to the monarchy of July, as well as moral maxims. Two pillars of the pigeon house also carry philosophical and religious engravings, while the henhouse and fountain (1807) complete this unique artistic ensemble.

The house was inhabited from 1777 to 1857 by Joseph Ichante, pastor, writer, painter, engraver and sculptor. He devoted much of his work to decorating the exterior walls of his house, transforming the site into an artistic and historical testimony. The protected elements include the house itself, as well as the nearby henhouse and fountain, listed in the inventory of Historic Monuments by order of 22 April 1996. The engravings and paintings, partially hidden by crepi, reveal a mixture of fervent patriotism, moral reflections and family chronicles, providing a rare glimpse of the intellectual and political life of the era.

The materials used, such as limestone for sculptures and l'ardoise for engraved plates, highlight the artisanal know-how of Joseph Ichante. The fountain, less decorated than the rest of the property, nevertheless bears an engraved decoration dating from 1807, marking a pivotal period in the history of the house. The whole reflects both the personal commitment of its owner and the political upheavals of France, from the Revolution to the July monarchy. Today, Ichante House remains a remarkable example of popular and committed art from the early 19th century, anchored in the cultural landscape of New Aquitaine.
