Door valves: inscription by order of 5 April 1930

Origin and history

The house in Figeac, in the Lot department in Occitanie region, is a 17th-century civil building. This monument illustrates the domestic architecture of the modern period, marked by stone constructions and sober but worked decorative elements. Although little documented in available sources, this house is distinguished by the protection of its door vants, inscribed in the Historical Monuments by order of 5 April 1930.

In the 17th century, Figeac was a dynamic city of Quercy, then integrated into the province of Languedoc, and later into Midi-Pyrénées. The houses of that time often served as houses for local merchants, artisans or notables, reflecting the economic prosperity of the wine, grain and leather trade. This type of building, typical of the medieval urban centres redesigned in modern times, played a central role in the social and economic life of the city.

Protected architectural elements, such as door vants, emphasize the importance attached to the aesthetics and durability of materials, often in carved oak or walnut, symbols of social status.
