Origin and history
The House Louis XIII, located in Romorantin-Lanthenay, is an old house dating from the 17th century. It illustrates the civil architecture of this period, with characteristic elements such as arches in the middle hanger on the ground floor and rectangular windows adorned with bosses and keys carved in diamond point on the first floor. These decorative details, typical of the Louis XIII style, underline the social status of its owner, probably an easy merchant.
The façade of the house, classified as Monument Historique by decree of 6 January 1926, presents skylights surmounted by circular frontons in volutes, interrupted by a carved pinacle. These architectural elements, combined with roses in relief, reflect the influence of emerging baroque motifs while maintaining a geometric rigor specific to the early seventeenth century. The building thus bears witness to the commercial prosperity of Romorantin-Lanthenay, a city situated on important shopping routes in Sologne.
The historic address of the house, originally located on the Grande-Rue (now 3 rue du Pont), confirms its location in a central area, probably dedicated to economic activities. The accuracy of its location, assessed as "a priori satisfactory", makes it possible to envisage its integration into the urban fabric of the time, where the houses of the merchants played a key role in the local social and economic life.
