Origin and history
The house of 47 Holgate Street, located in Carentan-les-Marais in the Manche department, is an iconic 18th-century building. It is distinguished by its preserved architecture, including its facades and roofs, as well as its thirty-one painted hazes distributed in several rooms on the ground floor and the first floor. These decorative elements, typical of the art of the Enlightenment century, testify to the refinement of the bourgeois habitat of the era.
The building was listed as historic monuments by order of 28 December 1978, thereby recognizing its heritage value. The protection covers not only exterior elements, such as facades and roofs, but also painted mists located in various spaces: entrances, corridors, dining rooms, bedrooms and bathrooms. These murals, often overlooked in private homes, offer a rare glimpse of the decorated domestic interiors of this period.
The location of the house, south-west of downtown Carentan, in a commune marked by Norman history, reinforces its interest. Carentan-les-Marais, an ancient medieval city that has become a strategic crossroads, retains a varied heritage, of which this house is a representative example. Its precise address, 47 Holgate Street, and its Insee code (50099) anchor in the Channel territory, in the Normandy region.
Although the available sources do not explicitly mention its original use or its owners, the presence of bathrooms and decorated rooms suggests an easy residence. Painted mists, often associated with wealthy sponsors, could indicate a connection with the local bourgeoisie or notables of the time. Their conservation until today makes it a valuable testimony of the 18th century decorative arts in Lower Normandy.
Practical information about opening up to the public or a possible tourist vocation (guest rooms, visits) is not specified in the sources consulted. However, its status as a historic monument makes it a potential point of interest for lovers of architectural and artistic heritage. The house thus remains a symbol of the rich Norman heritage, between urban history and the art of living of Ancien Régime.
