Façade and Roof (Box AP 380, 381): inscription by decree of 22 November 1949

Origin and history

The house in Auray, Brittany, is a typical example of wood-paned architecture. This type of construction, common in medieval or Renaissance city centres, reflects local craft techniques and the use of available materials such as wood and torchi. Although the exact period of its construction was not specified, its style and protection in 1949 suggested a recognized heritage value.

Wood-paned houses were often used as houses for merchants, artisans or notables in Breton cities. In Auray, a city marked by its port and commercial history, these buildings testify to the urban life of past times. Their preservation makes it possible today to understand the social and economic organization of the Breton villages, where these houses played a central role in everyday life.
