Origin and history
This house, classified Historic Monument, stands on the central square of the village of Cruguuel in Brittany. Built in the 2nd quarter of the 17th century (circa 1645, as indicated by the date engraved above the entrance door), it illustrates the rural civil architecture of the period. Its elongated rectangular plan and its prominent turret with a staircase facing the back are characteristic of the affluent homes of the region. The southern façade, with two rows of bolts (pigeonholes), is evidence of agricultural practices integrated with habitat.
The house underwent major renovations after 1973, affecting the interior, the cover (probably replacing an old thatched roof, suggested by the larmies of the western chimney) and two windows of the posterior facade. The chimney strain was completely redone during this work. A citizen of the West, it has retained protected elements since 1996: its facades and roofs, listed in the inventory of Historical Monuments by order of 25 January 1996.
Its location on the village square, the heart of community life, highlights its social and economic role in the 17th century Cruguel. The bolts, typical of Breton constructions, were used to house pigeons, symbol of status and food resource. The spiral staircase, often reserved for houses of notables, confirms its local importance. Today, his approximate address is 13 Place du Souvenir, although the accuracy of the location is considered satisfactory a priori (level 6/10).
