Origin and history

The house located at 104 rue de l'Hôpital-Militaire in Lille is a representative example of 19th century domestic architecture. Classified as a historical monument, it illustrates the bourgeois style of this period, with remarkable elements such as its facades, its roofs, and interior rooms preserving their original decoration, such as the vestibule, the living rooms, or the large bedroom upstairs. These characteristics reflect the taste for ornamentation and comfort that emerged among the affluent classes of the region.

The protection of this monument by decree of 21 December 1984 relates specifically to facades and roofs overlooking the street, as well as several interior rooms and their decoration, including the ramp of the main staircase. This inscription reflects the heritage value of the building, both for its exterior architecture and for the quality of its interior fittings, typical of the urban residences of the Lille elite in the 19th century.

Lille, a city in full industrial expansion during this period, saw the development of a varied architectural heritage, mixing workers' houses and bourgeois houses.
