Origin and history

The House then Hotel-restaurant Au Cygne is a building located in Eschau, in the Lower Rhine, in the Grand East region. Built in the 4th quarter of the 18th century, this house was transformed into a hotel-restaurant while retaining original architectural elements, including a polychrome ceiling decorated with plant motifs (flowers and rinceaux) dated 1794. This decor, located on the first floor, bears witness to the artisanal know-how of the period and the influence of decorative styles in vogue in Alsace at the end of the Ancien Régime.

The building was listed as historic monuments by order of 20 December 1996, specifically for its polychrome ceiling. This protection highlights its heritage interest, linked to both its 18th century civil architecture and its preserved interior decorations. Today, the building, located at 38 rue de la Première-Division-Blindée, embodies a representative example of Alsatian heritage, mixing local history and contemporary use.

At the end of the 18th century, Eschau, like many Alsatian localities, was marked by a rural and artisanal economy, where bourgeois or affluent houses often had neat interior decorations. These buildings served both as a place of life, social representation and, sometimes, as a professional space (inns, shops). The ceiling of 1794, with its plant motifs, reflects this desire for beautification, typical of the local elites of the time, while illustrating the cultural exchanges between France and the Rhine regions.
