Origin and history
The house on 3 Rue des Écuries, located in Riquewihr in the Haut-Rhin, is a remarkable example of Alsatian civil architecture of the late 16th century. Built in 1577, it is distinguished by its sandstone bellow façade, its two-storey oriel, and an entrance door with an accedged initials (DVDB) and an armored shield. The building also includes wood panel elements, notably on the second floor of the oriel, as well as a partially vaulted cellar in a cradle.
The house was built for Dominik uf der Bruck by the master mason Anthoni Mutzat, originally from Milan, who also intervened on other local buildings such as the house at 5 Rue du Cheval in 1579. Damaged during World War II, as evidenced by a 1946 photograph, it was redesigned to accommodate a hotel-restaurant. Its inscription as historic monuments in 1930 specifically concerns the main facade with its oriel and roof.
The interior preserves ancient remains, such as curved wooden poles, a straight staircase partially redone, and a ceiling with a floor drawing caissons on the second floor. These details, combined with the moulding of the windows and the splints, illustrate the craftsmanship of the time. The house, with its courtyard and outbuildings, thus reflects the architectural and functional evolution of an Alsatian bourgeois home between Renaissance and modern times.
