Origin and history

The houses on Rue Jean-Girard in Bourges date from the 15th and 16th centuries. They were built after the great fire of 1487, which ravaged part of the city. Designed for mixed use (housing and commerce), these buildings reflect Bourges' commercial activity during the Renaissance. Their wood-paned structure, with a characteristic diamond-shaped compartment, illustrates the techniques of the era, while their facade retains traces of later remodeling, including windows remodelled in the 18th century.

The house in number 3, classified as Historic Monument in 1928, is distinguished by its internal organization. The ground floor housed a modernized shop, while the floors, preserved, reveal a 16th century fireplace, mixing stone and moulure wood. This architectural detail bears witness to the social status of the owner, probably an easy trader. The official protection covers the façade, roof and chimney, highlighting their heritage value.

The historic address, initially 3 rue Édouard-Vaillant, was renamed after 1928. The current location, although documented, remains approximate according to available sources (map accuracy noted as fair). These houses thus embody the reconstruction of Bourges after 1487, while bearing the marks of subsequent urban and architectural developments.
