Origin and history

The Viloy barracks, located in Grenoble in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region, is a military building dating back to the 16th century. This monument is distinguished by protected architectural elements, such as a scald on the ramparts and a tower known as the Tower of Isle, which bears witness to its historic defensive role. These structures, inscribed in the Historical Monuments in 1943, illustrate the strategic importance of Grenoble at that time, marked by urban fortifications adapted to the conflicts of the Renaissance.

The schauguette, positioned at the corner of the Jonking Pier and Lavalette Square, as well as the 16th century tower, reflect the military construction techniques of the time. Their preservation, formalized by decrees in September 1943, underscores their heritage value in the Grenobles landscape. The barracks, still localizable at 2 Place de Lavalette, today embodies an architectural heritage linked to the defensive history of the city, while integrating into the modern urban fabric.

In the 16th century Grenoble, then under the influence of the Kingdom of France, experienced significant urban and military development. Barracks and towers, such as the Viloy barracks, served as both surveillance points and symbols of central or local power. Their construction met the need to protect against external threats, while organizing community life around these strategic infrastructures. This general historical context illuminates the primary role of the barracks in structuring the city.
