Origin and history

The Château de Saint-Germain-de-Livet, located near Lisieux in Normandy, is a Renaissance building composed of a 15th century wooden manor house and a stone and brick building of the late 16th century. This monument, now an annex to the intermunicipal museum of Lisieux, illustrates the typical architecture of the Pré d'Auge, an area known for its brick and stone constructions.

Given to the town of Lisieux in 1957 by the Riesener family, the castle has been home since 1978 to a museum featuring memories related to this family, including works of cabinetmaking and painting. The collections also include objects belonging to the painter Eugène Delacroix, as well as traces of the poets José-Maria de Heredia and Henri de Régnier, and the writer Alphonse Daudet. The guard room, decorated with well-preserved frescoes, and the period furniture make it a place of cultural memory.

The castle is labeled "Musée de France" and is distinguished by its furniture heritage and its links with major artistic figures. Its official address, according to Museofile, is located on the D 268 in Saint-Germain-de-Livet, in the Calvados department. The accuracy of its location is estimated as fair, with an approximate GPS address at Place de l'École.
