Origin and history

The castle of Baraigne, located in the eponymous village of Occitanie, was built mainly in the late sixteenth or early seventeenth century. It replaces older elements, probably from the 15th century, and originally belongs to the Buisson family. Barthélemy de Buisson (1568-1622), heir to the seigneury in 1613, was considered the probable sponsor of its construction. The castle, surrounded by moat and equipped with circular and square towers, reflects a defensive architecture typical of the period, with a harness and cannon guns for protection.

The seigneury of Baraigne passed into the hands of several generations of the family of Buisson, then, after the death without heirs of Pierre de Buisson, she was passed on to her sister Jeanne, married to François de Roquette in 1623. Their son, Antoine de Roquette-Buisson (1632-1694), became his lord. The castle, which retained traces of its defensive system such as a drawbridge and a round road, was listed as historical monuments in 1948. It was acquired in 1974 by a Norman industrialist, marking a transition to a more contemporary vocation.

The building is distinguished by its rectangular plan, flanked by towers at the southern angles and by an octagonal tower with a spiral staircase. The front door, framed by canned pilasters and surmounted by a triangular pediment, illustrates a classic Renaissance style. Architectural remains, such as the small cannons and the eyes of the steeple, testify to its defensive role during the troubled periods of Lauragais. Today, the castle remains a remarkable example of the castral heritage of Aude, between medieval heritage and adaptations of modern times.
