Origin and history

The Château de Caillères, located in Clérac in Charente-Maritime (New Aquitaine), is a building dating back to the 15th, 16th and 17th centuries. It is distinguished by a complex architecture, including a north facade that is not straight, resulting from an irregular plane. The main body, rectangular and covered with a two-paned roof, is completed by a second projecting building, with a four-paned roof and a semi-outbuilding tower. The latter houses a staircase with screws and features a door decorated with an arch in a braid, surmounted by a rectangular frame.

The facades and roofs of the castle were listed as historical monuments by order of 22 August 1949, thereby recognizing their heritage value. The northern facade, particularly remarkable, includes carved frame bays and an aileron skylight, whose triangular pediment is decorated with pinacles. These architectural elements reflect the stylistic evolutions of the construction eras, while at the same time testifying to the transformations experienced by the building over the centuries.

The castle of Caillères is part of a regional context marked by feudal and seigneurial history, where castles played a central role in social and economic organization. Although the sources do not mention any specific historical characters related to this monument, its architecture and its protection as historical monuments make it an important witness to the built heritage of Charente-Maritime. The approximate location, noted as "a priori satisfactory" (level 6/10), places the castle at the address "6 Cailleres, 17270 Clérac".
