Origin and history

The castle of Canaples was built at the end of the 19th century by the Amienese architect Anatole Beloved for a pharmacist of Doullens enriched by phosphate extraction. This monument, emblematic of the social ascent of the provincial bourgeoisie, blends the 17th and 18th century styles with a stone façade, a monumental porch and a Mansart roof. Its interior, influenced by the Renaissance, preserves mosaics, faiences and stained glass signed Gaétan Jeannin, as well as a winter garden decorated with Art Nouveau gardening.

During the First World War, the castle welcomed French and Allied officers, including the Prince of Wales (future Edward VIII) in the winter of 1917. The estate, protected since 2013, includes a 4.6 ha park combining landscape style and regular parts, as well as picturesque outbuildings (kennels, henhouses, rides). A ironwork grating dated 1908, the work of blacksmith Carpentier, marks the entrance to the park, where a giant thuya was classified as a remarkable tree in 2021.

The building reflects the fascists of the Belle Époque through its careful interior decorations (carried out, Parisian furniture by the Gourmain brothers) and its eclectic park, planted with various essences (thuyas, ifs, pines laricio). The outbuildings, made of brick with roofs, complete this architectural and social testimony, now owned by a private company. The architects Anatole Beloved and A. Delarue, as well as the master glassmaker Gaétan Jeannin, left their mark there.

Ranked a historic monument in 2013, the castle includes in its protection facades, roofs, interiors, gate, outbuildings and park. His history crossed with figures such as the Prince of Wales and his role during the Great War made him a place full of memory, while illustrating the evolution of the aesthetic tastes and lifestyles of the provincial elite between 1870 and 1920.
